How To Deal with Setbacks

“When one door closes, another door opens, but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us.”
– Alexander Graham Bell

Whether you lost your job, loved one or home, it can be hard and painful. For some we have the resilience to move on and for others, we find it difficult to let go. Here are a few ways to overcome the obstacles and bounce back.

Reflection

It’s normal to experience a range of emotions and feel sad, depressed or disappointed. Taking the time to recognize and process what you experienced is needed. Journaling a few minutes daily with affirmations helps to grieve and not dwell on setbacks.

Support

Talking to family, friends or mentors can provide the support and encouragement to move forward. Other ways to cope can include reading stories of successful people who faced major setbacks and failures in life before they succeeded.

Opportunity

Focusing on the lessons learnt can help not repeat the same mistakes and see the setback as a stepping stone to success. It can help re-ground you in your values and purpose. On the other hand, it could be an opportunity to learn something new such as writing, painting or fitness.

Keep Pushing

Small steps can lead to big results. Some days it can feel overwhelming to achieve your goals such as writing or exercising for an hour a day. Starting with 10 minutes a day helps create consistency and good habits to achieve bigger goals.

Faith

Suffering is part of life and temporary. Eventually, we can move forward with a good routine and positive attitude. Look forward to a new chapter, although the new opportunity may not present itself right away.
