The KL Brunch Hit List

The beautiful thing about food is it brings people together, builds bonds and creates conversations. Its a universal language to connect with another person and experience ones culture. Sometimes it could be a hint of that aroma, spice or flavor which gives you a warm feeling of home. It is an emotional connection you have with food.

When lockdown struck due to the pandemic, we weren’t able to travel but cooking different cuisines was a way to explore and transport you to a country’s culture. Baking & cooking was one of the ways I was able to reconnect and spend time with my mother, as we use to during childhood days. Talking about food around the world here is an infographic by the Insider, which shows what people eat for brunch food in 11 cities around the world including etiquettes and interesting facts.

It was in the late 1980’s that the brunch culture become mainstream and according to the Huffpost news article it has boomed in the last 10 years. Although there are negative connotations such as eating out often being expensive, it is a positive way to bond face to face with people, especially with our culture that is very dependent on technology.

In the heart of KL city the brunch scene is quite vibrant with a fusion of cultures. Let’s look at five brunch spots that have good food to put you in a good mood. (Please click on the links to be redirected to the website)

1.Antipodean

A laid back cafe that serves fresh food and never fails to disappoint. Rated as the neighborhood’s favorite place and one of the best places for coffee in KL. They have a range of breakfast options such as eggs benedicts, porridge, french toast plus lunch options like the Moroccan beef kebabs, Thai chicken satays, Vietnamese beef noodles, Burmese chicken paninis, crepes and more. A good spot for vegan eaters too. The scrambled eggs with feta & spinach is well cooked and delicious! If you want to indulge a little you can try out the banana pancakes with butterscotch.

The best thing about VCR is their brunch food from a variety of cultures from the ‘Japanese Unagi affair’ – fresh water eel with a sweet tangy honey lemon vinigrette salad, ‘Turkish Style Eggs’ which has chickpeas in creamy Greek yogurt with soft boiled eggs, sourdough toast to the ‘Scandinavian Breakfast’ – with house cured salmon Gravadiax and ofcourse the classic ‘American Big Breakfast’ sausages, turkey ham, beef bacon, eggs and toast. Turkish style eggs – these bad boys are one of my favorites around KL that I keep going back for it.
